Quick Render Lighting Rig

Very simple set up for looking at studio style lighting, this is quick to render for most objects, there is lots of tutorials out there on Maya and blogs but sometimes the simplest things are the hardest to find...

1. Create a point light; assign mib_fg_occlusion to the point lights color node.

2. Select the camera you wish to render your view from and change the background color to white in the attribute editor.

3. Create a groundplane. Go to hypershader>surface and assign "use background" to the ground plane.

4. Under mental ray render settings tick final gather,to increase edge sharpness turn sampling and multi-pixel filtering up.

5. Render.

Digital Painting

In my first year of uni i bought a £20.00 Trust tablet, for the price it wasnt actually to bad, when I got around to using it I was hooked, since then I got my hands on a second hand Wacom which is a definite improvment, still eyeing up a Cintiq though...

Fat Robot built in Maya

Robot character was originally planned to be used in my factory scene but the styles of the environment and the robot didnt really match, the original idea was the last robot of a production line before an war event. The robot would be sitting in the factory alone but when I placed him in the scene it didnt really go.

How to Render a Wireframe in Maya

1. Go to the objects shader in the attribute panel or hypershader and click on the SG tab E.g. lambert2SG/blinn3SG.Click on the contour's drop down menu and enable contour rendering, here you can also choose what color you would like the contours to appear. Under width type .500.

2. Now go to render mental ray settings>features>contours and enable contour rendering again, Change the over-sample to 3 and filter type to Gaussian this will give your contours a smoother appearance.

3. Finally go to the draw by property difference drop down (under the contours tab) and select around all poly faces. Hit render!

You can also render objects with there materials and the contours by following the same process.

Maya Lighting and Rendering

Factory Model 2011

Finished lighting this scene after far too long playing with Maya lighting settings (as usual). The final scene was lit using  parti volume lighting.Although its fairly easy to set up getting it right can take forever and the render times had me staring at monitors for days. Will post a quick tutorial on the setup sometime soon.
